Memorial Day 2013

A day of celebrations and barbeques or a day of solemn remembrance? It can be both.

A beautiful way to mark the occasion is the Taps at Twilight ceremony at Neptune  Park on St. Simons Island. The event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Simons Island, includes patriotic music, including a bagpipe introduction, marches for each branch of the armed forces, and a trumpet playing "Taps" to close. I married an Army officer, was the daughter of a Marine, and had several other members of my family who served as well, so for me it's hard to keep a dry eye. This year's guest speaker is U.S. Marine Major General Larry Taylor. Bring your chairs and your family to the ceremony at 6:45 p.m. to mark your observance of the real reason for this holiday.

Music on Memorial Day:

Backbeat Boulevard will liven up the Village, playing outside at Brogen's South from noon to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00-6:00 p.m. These guys always put on a great show from sweet ballads to high energy favorites, you're bound to hear some tunes you love.

Monday nights are Open Mic Night at Palm Coast Coffee on St. Simons Island. Always popular with locals and island visitors alike, the outdoor venue is a great spot to sit back and listen to the music. Sign up starts at 8:00 p.m., music begins at 8:30 p.m.

Tipsy McSway's in downtown Brunswick is hosting a special blues show featuring Manew Blew on Monday night. Manew, a frequent visitor from France, is a blues singer and harmonica player. He will perform with fellow musicians Jim Barcaro and Tom Leon on guitar. Music from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. No cover.

Whatever your Memorial Day plans, make sure there's some music involved! Enjoy the day and be safe out there!
